Adults with Learning Disabilities

This team of four Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) staff work as part of the Newham Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities based at Units 7 & 8 of Stratford Office Village.

The service works with clients aged from 16 years through to old age. Clients are seen in a range of community settings such as their own homes, staffed housing projects, day opportunities services as well as at Units 7 & 8.

SLT staff may offer:

  • One to one individual assessment and intervention to identify communication needs and strengths within various environments.
  • Training and advice for families, other professionals as well as care/support staff.
  • Training and support to develop the use of alternative ways of communicating e.g. signing, communication books and symbols. Also recommendations regarding other SLT therapeutic approaches to assist communication.
  • Individual work to assess and help to manage eating/drinking and swallowing problems.
Much of the work which the SLT staff do is working with other staff and carers. SLT also work jointly with other teams in the Community Team setting as well as liaising with other staff in the Local Authority and Voluntary groups.
